nagi steps past the border into the distortion, and he’s on the ceiling. [break][break]

it feels anticlimatic, almost. he had expected a sense of displacement, a wrenching, something torn out of him and left beyond the membrane of the rift. but this all there is: a flash of light like a camera flare, his ears popping, and he’s standing on the branch of a tree, looking up at the ground. a party trick. [break][break]

or maybe he’s been inured to hoenn’s oddities. still — he knows better than to underestimate the distortion. hoenn is a dirty dealer with a callous hand, hiding cards up its sleeves and knives in its boots. enough reports have circulated to his desk on his way to PENELOPE LIVY 's for him to be well-aware of their dangers — even if entirely secondhand.[break][break]

his camera clatters against his sternum, swaying on its leather strap as he rolls his shoulders back, peering out at the changed landscape and casting a glance askance at the man accompanying him. they’re supposed to take a few pictures, snag a few samples, make another timestamped entry in a chronological record of changes unfolding within the rifts. a simple enough mission: in-and-out reconnaissance, only with the zest of mortal danger. it's a good thing Gunner Graves is here. there'll be someone left to finish the job, and send his condolences to their boss after nagi is launched, spinning like a propeller into an alternate universe after tripping on his shoelaces. [break][break]

The reports on the strange Distortion World were not sufficient for preparing Gunner for the firsthand experience. He stood next to nagi miwa on the tree branch, feeling like gravity should be pulling his hair down and causing his tie to fall into his face.[break][break]

No such thing happened, however. Perhaps even to his disappointment.[break][break]

"Might as well," Gunner said in agreement. He looked around, wondering how the hell to get down from the tree, then simply jumped.[break][break]

Nothing happened then, either. He scratched his chin, then eyed the tree trunk. "Okay, how about this…"[break][break]

Tentatively, he placed a foot on the trunk, then his other one. He stood up straight, as if it were the new 'ground'.[break][break]

"I don't think I'm going to get used to this, Miwa," Gunner said, uncertain. Glancing around, he half-expected mutated Pokémon or even their DOPPELGANGERS to show up and attack.
